Vitruvius & Leonardo Da Vinci

Vitruvius (Marcus Vitruvius Pollio) was a Roman architect, engineer, and author of the seminal treatise De Architectura (On Architecture), written in the 1st century BCE. This ten-volume work is the only surviving architectural text from antiquity and outlines principles of symmetry, proportion, and harmony for designing buildings

Vitruvius’ work profoundly influenced Renaissance thinkers, including Leonardo da Vinci, whose famous drawing Vitruvian Man is a direct homage to the Roman architect’s ideas. In his treatise De Architectura, Vitruvius described the human body as a model of proportion and symmetry, suggesting that its measurements could be used to design harmonious and balanced structures.

Da Vinci expanded on Vitruvius’ principles, applying his own anatomical studies and mathematical precision to create a masterpiece that blends art and science. Vitruvian Man not only reflects the Renaissance ideal of merging knowledge disciplines but also serves as a testament to the enduring influence of Vitruvius’ philosophy on the relationship between nature, humanity, and design.
